Sent from his Father’s throne on high,\nStill at his sight in glory crowned,\nThe word of God went forth to die,\nShades of the evening closed him round.\n2. Ere by his own false friend betrayed,\nGiven to his foes to death went he,\nHis own true self in form of Bread\nHe gave his friends, their life to be.\n3. Twofold the gift his love did plan,\nHis flesh to feed, his blood to cheer,\nThat flesh and blood, the whole of man,\nMight find its own fulfilment here\n4. The manger, Christ, their equal made,\nThat upper room, their souls’ repast,\nThe Cross, their ransom dearly paid,\nAnd heaven, their high reward at last.\n5. Great victim, whose deserts avail\nThe gate of Heaven so wide to throw,\nThou seest what fears, what foes assail;\nOn trembling hearts thy aid bestow.\n6. To God, the Blessèd One in Three,\nBe praise and worship ever more;\nSo may we pass eternity,\nPoor exiles, on our native shores.
