THE DAY OF WRATH

The day of wrath, that awful day,\nShall all the world in ashes lay,\nDavid and Sibyls prophesy;\nAnd Oh; what trembling will there be,\nWhen the judge comes in majesty,\nTo try the world unsparingly.\n2. The trumpets send its wondrous sound\nThrough all the tombs beneath the ground,\nAnd brings all to the Judgement Seat;\nNature and death shall stand amazed,\nWhen they behold the creature raised,\nThe judge’s questioning to meet.\n3. Now shall the written book appear;\nIn which all actions are made clear,\nThat to this judgement are assigned;\nThe Judge His Judgment Seat shall take,\nAll hidden things shall public make,\nNothing impunity shall find.\n4. Unhappy me, what shall I say,\nAnd to what patron shall I pray,\nWhen e’en the just might quake with dread?\nO King of fearful majesty,\nThou savest freely, O save me,\n1 05\nThou art sweet pity’s Fountain Head.\n5. For love of me, sweet Jesus kind,\nThou cam’st on earth; call this to mind,\nAnd save me in that day of pain;\nThou soughtest me with weary care,\nTo save me thou the cross didst bear;\nLet not such labour be in vain.\n6. Thou, who dost righteous vengeance take,\nA grant of free forgiveness make,\nBefore the accounting day arrives,\nWith blushes deep and heartfelt moan,\nO God, oppressed with guilt, I groan,\nSpare one, who for thy pardon strives.\n7. Who Mary didst absolve from sin,\nFrom whom the thief did pardon win,\nThou givest hope to me in turn;\nGood Jesus, worthless is my prayer,\nYet deign to grant, that I may ne’er\nIn hell’s avenging fire burn.\n8. Give me a place among thy sheep,\nFar from the goats, oh, let me keep,\nAnd station me on thy right hand;\nWhen the accursed confess their shames,\nAnd are condemned to biting flames,\nAmong the blessèd bid me stand.\n9. Prostrate before thy feet I fall,\nOn thee with contrite heart I call,\nOf my last end, oh, take the care:\nTearful will be that day of woe,\nWhen, from his ashes rising now,\nFrail man to Judgement must repair;\nSpare him, O God, in mercy spare!\nJesus, Love reigns within thy breast,\nGrant to the dead eternal rest. Amen.
